Why won't my dryer start?

How to kickstart a dryer that won’t start

You don’t need added difficulty on laundry day—a dryer that won’t start is a major obstruction. We’ll help you understand exactly why your dryer struggles or won’t start. Our experts have experience working with the full range of dryers from major brands and know how to quickly spot your appliance’s issue. We give you our best guidance on whether your dryer requires maintenance, repair, or replacement service because of starting issues.

1. Drive motor

If you hear your dryer humming as usual, but the appliance is not in operation you may have a drive motor problem. Need extra assistance? Our expert technicians can take you through a video call diagnostic checklist to assess driver belts and other parts to indicate if your drive motor is out of commission.

2. Start switch

The power supply is fine, the lights are on, and the door switch appears to be okay. But nothing happens when you press the start switch. The switch itself could be to blame. Test it with a multimeter (or get a specialist to do it). If there's no continuity, your dryer could be repaired with a simple replacement start switch.

3. Door switch

Sometimes major components, from lights to power supply, all appear operational, but the dryer still won’t turn on. In this case you may simply need to replace your dryer switch. We recommend you take the time to request expert assistance to test your machine.

4. Control board

The dryer control board is unlikely to malfunction, but it shouldn’t be entirely ruled out. Requesting a professional appliance diagnostic is the most effective way to identify a control board issue and have the board replaced if necessary.

5. Thermal fuse

Your home appliances are designed with an internal safety mechanism to protect you and your home. One such safety feature is the thermal fuse. They are designed to blow when a dryer reaches unsafe temperatures. If this fuse is blown it likely means your dryer vents were blocked by debris and the machine overheated. Before replacing this fuse, make sure to completely clean any vent blockage for your safety.
