Why is my dishwasher clogged?

How to diagnose what’s clogging your dishwasher

When you expect sparkling clean dishes, you don’t want to open the dishwasher to a murky tub of water. Standing water is a clear sign your dishwasher might have a clog that’s interfering with the wash cycle. Diagnosing exactly what’s causing the clog can take up hours of your time, but our guide will help you quickly identify common causes.

1. Air gap

Check the dishwasher air gap to stop water from blocking the drainage in your appliance. The air gap can be cleaned out by first uninstalling and setting aside your machine’s chrome cover, and then removing any blockage that has collected in this space.

2. Sink/garbage disposal

The drain hose in your dishwasher is interconnected to your kitchen’s sink and/or garbage disposal system. Because of this connection, a clog in your sink can also mean a clog for your dishwasher. Make sure to run the garbage disposal before running the dishwasher and note if anything is obstructing the drain system.

3. Drain filter

Another place a clog can cause trouble is in your dishwasher’s drain filter. The drain filter can be easily cleaned with hot water and soap. Just gently scrub away any debris and then reinstall the filter to your dishwasher.
